No visit to Seattle is complete without a trip to the iconic Pike Place Market near downtown Seattle. Founded in 1907, the market has grown to stretch over nine acres and you can find just about everything from food to fish, to coffee, artisan cheese, antique and jewelry shops, bookstores, and so much more. The market's peak occurs during the warmer months, when hundreds of vendors can be found selling their goods. There's really nothing quite like it.
And, there's certainly no shortage of vegan food. Here is an inexhaustive list of some of the vegan options you might find at Pike Place Market:
The Crumpet Shop
It might be surprising to find out that crumpets can be vegan. The Crumpet Shop on 1st Ave sells amazing crumpets, coffee, scones, and more. When toasted without butter, the crumpets themselves are vegan. Have them with fruit preserves or maple butter (like I did). One's a snack, two's a meal.
Piroshky Piroshky
Piroshky Piroshky is a true Seattle spot. Piroshkies are traditional Russian hand pies and this shop has been around since 1992. They offer a few vegan options: veggie chipotle, potato and mushroom, and Impossible beef and onion.
Starbucks
No visit to Pike Place Market would be complete without a visit to the home of the original Starbucks. Though the first location burned down, visitors can still get coffee and souvenirs from this location.
Honest Biscuits
Seattle loves biscuits. Honest Biscuits, tucked next to Indi Chocolate and Old Stove Brewing Co. and looking over the Seattle harborfront, has a vegan biscuit sandwich that comes with Mushroom Field Roast, Chao spicy vegan cheese, pickled onions, micro arugula, and stout mustard. Definitely a great spot for brunch.
Cinnamon Works
Looking for pastries or dessert? Cinnamon Works has you covered! One of the few scratch bakeries left in Seattle, they have quite a few vegan options. There are three main vegan cookie flavors: oatmeal raisin, snickerdoodle, and chocolate chip walnut; there are vegan breads and muffins, and a maple cinnamon roll. Be sure to get there early in the day for the full selection.
El Borracho
El Borracho is a 100% plant-based Mexican restaurant on 1st Ave with a bar and outdoor dining. It's a sit-down restaurant where you order via a QR code on your table and the food is delivered right to you. We tried the vegan chips and queso with salsa, the chipotle potato taco, and the seitan barbacoa taco. They also serve burritos and bowls, and they have a salsa fridge if you don't have enough for your food.
Other places that may have vegan options include Ghost Alley Espresso (located near the legendary Great Gum Wall), Rojo's Mexican Food, Pike Place Chowder, and Shy Giant Frozen Yogurt.
This is by no means an exhaustive list. Vendors vary by time and season. Some are closed on certain days. Some might say they are open online but are closed in reality. We visited Pike Place Market at least three or four times, and we found something new with each visit. If you're ever in Seattle, Pike Place Market is a must-see.
