Last month, a friend and I spent a week in Barcelona. It was my first time in Europe (other than a 48-hour layover in Paris when I was four years old), and I’m glad we chose Barcelona. We stayed in a cute apartment near Sant Pau, and mainly walked everywhere. Because of that, I had the chance to find so many vegan and vegan-friendly bakeries in the city (Barcelona has a TON). For the sake of post length, I’ve only included the 100% vegan bakeries in Barcelona, and not the non-vegan ones with vegan-friendly options. (You’ll probably want to go to the vegan ones anyway, and there are so many of them). Here is my list of the best vegan bakeries in Barcelona:
Natury
This vegan bakery and cafe was only about a 17-minute walk from our apartment, but I didn’t get to visit until the second-to-last day of our trip (and I really wish I had gone sooner). The owner was super friendly, and I was able to communicate with him in my Spanglish. It’s a small cafe, but there were a lot of people in there. Since we were on our way to lunch, I didn’t get much, but I did try the cinnamon roll, which was warm, gooey, and everything you want a cinnamon roll to be. I did feel bad, because the owner kept asking if I wanted anything else (I did, but I couldn’t). If you’re ever near the Sant Martí neighborhood, definitely stop by.
Hanai Vegana
I’m still upset that I didn’t have the opportunity to visit Hanai Vegana when I was in the area, since one of their locations was closed (they’re closed on Mondays and Tuesdays). They’re a 100% vegan AND gluten-free bakery with storefronts in Gràcia and Born, and you can also order goodies online. They have a massive selection of desserts, including alfajores, cakes, and more.
La Consciente
La Consciente is a 100% vegan and gluten-free bread bakery in Barcelona! They’re a cozy little cafe that gives you a discount if you bring your own bag (I brought my own with me on my trip as it was). More than just bread, they also have pizza and a variety of desserts, plus vegan cheese, all picture-perfect and Instagram-worthy. They’re closed Sundays and Mondays, and you can check out their Instagram here.
Areca Bakery (NEW)
At a time when a lot of vegan restaurants and cafes are closing, or rebranding to include meat or seafood, Areca Bakery actually opened up recently, and it’s another 100% vegan bakery with gluten-free options. They have really cute decorated donuts, cheesecake, a brownie, a savory sandwich, and cinnamon rolls, all of which you can order online ahead of time. I was able to find Areca on delivery apps if you’re so inclined.
Tonka Pastisseria Vegana
Another recently launched bakery, Tonka Pastisseria Vegana also has Instagram-worthy desserts (as exhibited by their linked Instagram profile). They have both savory and sweet options, use only organic and local ingredients, and also serve coffee with non-dairy milk options. You can order in advance or directly at the shop, and they’re also open every day except Sundays.
The Vegan Corner
The Vegan Corner is a hidden gem in Barcelona, an open-air cafe in the Gothic Quarter, with light music on in the background. We stopped here in the afternoon one day, after our brunch at the Sercotel Hotel didn’t have vegan options available. The woman behind the counter was nice (and patient). I believe I ordered the iced chai latte, ham and cheese croissant, and hazelnut (or chocolate?) croissant for dessert. Everything was so good, and I’m not the biggest fan of fake meat but I didn’t mind this vegan ham. They’re open seven days a week. You can also check out their Instagram.
Debbie’s Good Veggie Food
Debbie’s Good Veggie Food is another newer cafe in the Sant Martí, Clot and Poblenou neighborhoods. They also serve up savory and sweet options, including sandwiches, cakes, rolls, muffins, brownies, donuts, quiches, and so much more. They do brunch on Sundays! You can also order online and I also saw them on food delivery apps, including Uber Eats (though my preference is Glovo and I used them exclusively).
Magma Bakery Lab
This bakery is so far down this list, but this is the one that I regret not visiting the most. Magma Bakery Lab is also in Barcelona’s Poblenou district and they’re open every day except for Mondays and Tuesdays (which is the norm for a lot of places in Barcelona). They handcraft beautiful pastries, croissants, danish, cakes, and more, all complemented by specialty coffee from a local coffee roaster, Abyss, and kombucha.
Benevola
If I haven’t already convinced you to check out Barcelona’s Sant Martí, Clot, and Poblenou neighborhoods, here’s another vegan bakery in those neighborhoods. You could spend an entire day wandering around these neighborhoods, visiting the beach and shopping, and stopping in every bakery you pass. Benevola is no different; owned by Camilo and Toni, this pastry shop has cute little tarts and cakes, and should most certainly be on your list.
Vegan Cheesecake Barcelona
The only spot on this list without a storefront, Vegan Cheesecake Barcelona is an online-only vegan bakery offering various types of cheesecakes, including Biscoff, dark chocolate, raspberry, and more. You can order over the phone or through their Instagram, and they deliver in the Barcelona metro area, or you can pick up near the Vallcarca metro station. They’re also open seven days a week.
