Where to Find Vegan Pizza in New Jersey (Updated September 2025)

One of the first things I looked for when I first started transitioning to a plant-based diet was vegan pizza in New Jersey. New Jersey is known for great pizza and no, I will not argue with New Yorkers or people from New Haven who think theirs is superior. Quality > quantity/price. Dollar slices don’t even cost a dollar anymore! Thanks, inflation. Still, good pizza isn’t easy to find. Great pizza, even less so, but New Jersey pizza stands on its own.

It’s that oil and grease that you have to sop up with napkins, the salty cheese that burns the roof of your mouth, and a thick layer of Jersey tomato sauce seasoned perfectly. It’s that perfect dough with a slightly burnt, crispy, yet soft crust. You call up your favorite place on speed dial and say, “Extra large plain pie for pick-up, please”. You’ll buckle in your red-and-white cardboard box with the cartoon chef on top in the passenger seat so it doesn’t slip. It’s the smell that lingers in your car long after the pizza’s finished.

My mouth is watering.

Regardless, if you live in the Garden State, you know how spoiled we are when it comes to excellent pizza. Where I live, there are pizzerias down the street from each other and even in the same strip mall. I can count ten places in my town off the top of my head alone.

However, finding vegan pizza is an entirely different challenge. I always get asked if I miss anything since I switched and my answer is always the same: pizza. Sure, you can find frozen pizza or you can make your own but it doesn’t hit the same. And it’s not the dough or the sauce or the toppings that are the problem: it’s the cheese.

Thankfully, there are local pizzerias that offer vegan versions of pizza (and a ton of other items!) to fill the gap. They still may not touch non-vegan pizza, but I’ll happily take it. Check out a few places in Central Jersey* whose vegan pizza I recommend and places on my list to try:

*For “legal” purposes, I’m limiting Central Jersey to Middlesex, Somerset, Mercer, and Monmouth counties. Hunterdon, Ocean, and Union counties notwithstanding.

Pat D’s – Howell

Pat D’s has now become my go-to pizza place. My family got together for a Super Bowl watch party last month and it’s the one day of the year that I need pizza. If everyone else gets to eat it, why shouldn’t I? So I drove 25 minutes to Howell to pick up a small vegan white pie with garlic knot crust and it was more than worth it. It’s my new favorite vegan pizza spot in the area and I can’t wait to go back and try more of their vegan items. I’ve since had their plain pie, which was fantastic. They have an entire menu with specialty pizza pies, calzones, pastas, subs, and more. They also now offer vegan pepperoni and sausage for an extra charge, which is a GAME-CHANGER. I haven’t had the pepperoni but the sausage is quite good.

Romeo’s – Manalapan

I highly, highly recommend Romeo’s pizza in Manalapan. When I think of Jersey pizza, this is what I think of. It’s that hypnotizing swirl of sauce and a thin layer of cheese with a bubbly crust. They have a few other vegan menu options too (a whole section!) so definitely check it out if you’re local.

Pasquale’s Pizzeria III – Middletown

Another excellent option. The cheese is a little too gooey/gummy for my preference (it might actually be Daiya cheese?) but it’s still delicious. I always try the plain pies first but they have an entire vegan menu that’s incredibly extensive as well. You definitely wouldn’t get tired of eating the same thing over and over again but there are so many options; why would you? When I go back, I want to try a half-and-half with their buffalo tempeh and mac and cheese options. Don’t forget the garlic knot crust!

Parmagianni Pizza – Asbury Park

This one’s a bit of a hike for me but fortunately, they did a pop-up recently in North Brunswick and I got my hands on this amazing vegan Detroit-style pizza. Some might consider it blasphemy to call it pizza and might be more of a casserole but no matter what you call it, it was damn good. The above photo is “Two Stripe Life” but they have a ton of other flavors like Motor City Mac, BBQ Jackfruit, Pickle Pie, and more.

Tino’s Artisan Pizza Co. – Multiple Locations

I ordered Tino’s Artisan Pizza Co. a few months ago and while it was delicious, I will opt to dine in next time because this pizza (as they note on their takeout box), tastes infinitely better when it’s fresh. Mine came from the South Brunswick/Kingston location. They clearly mark their vegan options on the menu and they offer both a plant pie with sauce, vegan mozzarella, plant-based pepperoni, and vegan Italian sausage AND a vegano formaggio pie with vegan mozzarella, mushrooms, red onions, peppers, plant-based pepperoni and extra virgin olive oil. They have a 12″ vegan sourdough roman flatbread you can use to sub for their other pies and offer the following vegan toppings: mozzarella, pepperoni and sausage for an additional charge.

Stewart’s Drive In – East Brunswick

I tried Stewart’s one day in September (2023) because I had no energy to leave the house but wanted pizza. This was their vegan personal size pizza with crispy vegan chick’n as an additional topping. I actually quite enjoyed this; again, not typical Jersey pizza (or pizza in general) and could definitely be better but I liked that they had a variety of toppings to choose from and the vegan crispy chick’n was nice. I was picking them off and eating them separately.

Luigi’s – Old Bridge

This was a surprise find! This is the closest pizzeria to me and they have a vegan, plant-forward section of their menu. I tried the vegan gluten-free pizza (seen above) but they also have a vegan cauliflower crust pizza. It’s definitely not the pizza I’m used to but it’s not the worst option.

Teresa’s – Princeton, Shrewsbury

Teresa’s is something my parents found! (It’s actually been around 1991 so it’s older than me) They went out to dinner and brought home a vegan pie for me. It’s not a separate option on the menu but you can ask for vegan cheese with any of their pizza options, which is great to know if you’re in the area. It probably tasted much better right out of the oven but after reheating, it tasted great and I always love the addition of fresh basil. It tasted like Neopolitan-style pizza.

Chimney Rock Inn – Bridgewater, Flemington

This large almost Margherita-style pizza is from the location in Bridgewater and features a whole wheat crust, crushed tomato sauce, vegan cheese, and fresh basil. They also have a farmstand vegan version that has fresh veggies and vegan chorizo is available as a topping option. They also have a few other vegan options, including chili, tacos, and nachos if you’re not in the mood for pizza.

Chicago’s Pizza With A Twist – Edison

I have now been to Chicago’s Pizza With A Twist twice, both for celebratory dinners, and I was initially drawn to them because of the sheer volume of vegan, plant-based options they have. They do fun South Asian twists on their pizza, which is not traditional Jersey-style pizza. The first time, I could not tell you what I tried, but I wasn’t a big fan of the fake “meat”, which tasted like cauliflower. The cheese was pretty decent, though. The second time I went, I only got the plant-based cheesy garlic bread, which was miles better, and my 10-year-old, meat and dairy-loving cousin loved it too. It’s relatively inexpensive, especially for larger groups, and it definitely tastes better fresh, but because I was having stomach issues, I didn’t touch my leftovers at home.
