No matter when you’re traveling to Barcelona, it’s never a bad time for ice cream. It’s the perfect way to wrap up a meal, or a place to stop on your walk back home for the night for a late-night sweet treat. Thankfully, Barcelona has a plethora of options, vegan or not. For the sake of this blog post, I’m limiting the options to places that have more than one vegan-friendly flavor, and said vegan flavors are not just fruit sorbets (which I do not consider ice cream).
Here is my list of places where you can find vegan ice cream (or gelato) in Barcelona:
I had gelato (or ice cream) just once while I was in Barcelona, and I’m happy that it was at AMMA Gelato, located in the neighborhood of Gràcia. We were walking through on our way back down from a tour of Park Güell, and we stopped here for an afternoon pick-me-up. I am so glad that we did. Their gelato is made fresh every day using fresh fruits, nuts, and cacao, and they have cookies and brownies in addition to the gelato. I can’t even tell what flavors I got because I don’t remember, but I did taste a few and they were all excellent. They’re open seven days a week.
Madonna Vegan is another small, 100% vegan ice creamery located within walking distance of El Raval and the Mercat de la Boqueria. They have more than 20 flavors, so there’s an option for everyone, whether you’re on a plant-based diet or not. They’re open only on the weekends from Fridays to Sundays, so definitely plan accordingly. You might be going to the Mercat as it is, so I recommend stopping by before or after your trip.
CAJÚ Gelato is another vegan, plant-based ice cream shop located near the Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar. They have a solid mix of both fruit sorbet and non-fruit sorbet flavors, and they make their waffle cones fresh in-house. This place is closed on Mondays, but open from 1 PM to midnight the rest of the week.
Not far from CAJÚ Gelato is another vegan-friendly gelato shop in Gocce di Latte Vegana. They have an extensive list of flavors, and also have vegan-friendly cones and crepes. They are open seven days a week, but their hours do vary.
Heladeria Barcelona (Gelateria Palau)
La Gelateria Palau is a 100% artisan ice cream shop centrally located in the heart of Barcelona. They are celiac-friendly (flavors are 100% gluten-free) and offer an extensive list of vegan options, clearly labeled in-store. Their cones are also reported to be vegan-friendly. They are open seven days a week from noon to midnight, making it an ideal place to stop after a late night.
Manna Gelats
Located in the city’s Gothic Quarter, near the Cathedral of Barcelona, Manna Gelats is a vegan-friendly gelataria open Tuesday to Sunday, 3:00 to 8:30 PM. They’re a favorite spot in Barcelona, for locals and tourists alike, and are rated very highly. They offer several vegan-friendly flavors that rotate daily, including ginger and cinnamon, tamarind, orange chocolate, mojito, and more.
Gianduia
Another shop open from noon to midnight, Gianduia (which means ‘Nutella’ in gelato-speak, allegedly) is a small ice cream shop in the Gothic Quarter with plenty of vegan-friendly flavors, mostly fruit sorbets and a dark chocolate gelato. They’re open seven days a week, and they have a pro-Palestinian sticker on their storefront. Ask about the cones.
DelaCrem is another artisan ice cream shop, this time located in the Eixample neighborhood. If you are dining at Desoriente, a popular vegan spot in Barcelona, this is a convenient place to stop by. They offer about 13 vegan-friendly flavors, though availability and variety may vary by day, and their vegan-friendly flavors are reported to not be clearly labeled, so you may have to ask. They are open seven days a week, but their hours do vary.
If you’re looking for a sweet treat after your tour of the Basílica de la Sagrada Familia, you’re in luck. Carambola, located steps away, is another artisan ice cream (and chocolate!) shop with vegan-friendly ice cream flavors. These are mostly fruit flavors, but they do have chocolate. It is, of course, located in a very touristy part of Barcelona.
